The third Melbourne Independent Filmmakers Festival is this
weekend, bringing the works of indie filmmakers to audiences in
the Metro Cinema Café and the Henegar Center for the Arts in downtown
Melbourne. Tonight, there's a "Creature Feature" at the Metro
Cinema Café consisting of short films, and Beware, by Jason Daly
of Jupiter, and the sci-fi feature Aurora (made in Los Angeles).
Among the shorts: The Final Minute, a "What if God was outlawed?"
piece by Jon Freda of Winter Park, and A Case of Kidnap by Louis
Lowy of Miami Lakes. The reception begins at 8, with screenings
starting at 8:30. Tickets to that event are $5, and some of the
filmmakers will be present. Saturday, screenings start at 9:30
a.m. at the Henegar Center for the Arts. The list of films to
be shown includes Clay (by Bill Holley of Altamonte Springs),
Insane Tales, (by Rick Styczynski of Kissimmee), The Last Game
(by Ralph Clemente, Key Howard and Kevin James, of Orlando) and
Strip Mall Trilogy (by Roger Beebe of Gainesville). There's also
an Australian movie by former The Thorn Birds star Rachel Ward
(The Big House) and pieces from New Zealand, Ireland and all over
America. Saturday, there's a 7 p.m. reception and an evening of
previews or works in progress, including Alligator Alley by Orlando
filmmaker Britt Nichols, and assorted short films.
